Lumenatic did an absolute fab job at shooting a Ferrari in studio. Offcourse, you wouldn’t notice rightaway that it was a scale model of the real car. Inspired from him, I set on my journey to shoot the Mitsubishi Pajero scale model(1:24) which I had since my childhood days. Sure, its not in its original mint position but I had tons of fun shooting it. Not to forget, I learnt a lot about lighting.
To begin with I just used one light for the above shot as my secondary speedlight conked off. It also meant for the second shot, I had to rely on the natural window light in addition to speedlight.
Let me know, how you feel about these shots.
Hey Gaurav, good job ! The image with the black background looks realistic – the illusion that it’s a real car is given. Perhaps try to angle the light source above the car a little (do you have a softbox for your flash). This would highlight the rim of the front column and the fender.
The fully illuminated image is also a good product photo, but the illusion is gone. Why ? When looking at the image you instantly notice details which show you that it is a model. For example the door handle, the gap between the door and the chassis, the tires (you don’t see nuts, just indented circles which symbolize the nuts).
The trick is to shed only a little light on the model. The dark areas hide the missing details of the model and contribute to the illusion.

Lumenatic, I’m working with an umbrella & a non-macro lens. I’m sure I can create more better shots with some improvisation.
I agree with you, the second highkey shot does not comes even close to the first one. The model doesn’t has good finish(especially at wheels as you pointed) & it has endured a hard time from me in my childhood.
Grateful for your feedback here. This shoot wasn’t possible without your inspiration. Thank you so much.

What fun this is! I like them both in very different ways, and quite hard to believe you were working with a miniature. Great way to learn lighting and experiment along the way! But Gaurav… where are the “little people”? LOL!

Fay, I should drop down at your place for the tiny people. Thank you for the praise. Indeed this shoot taught me a lot. As I said in above comment, still some way to go in my view to make them absolutely perfect. Good to see you here. 🙂
