Tablets & big screen mobiles are a common commodity in this age. The amount of processing power these devices pack in have led to rise of increasing use of these devices for purpose of photo editing & even video rendering. There are tons of apps in the Play Store which deal with adding effects(editing) photos on the device without the need of a PC but very few offer to order photo prints from mobile/tablet.
One of the app which offers to send your prints from your digital photos is “Photo Prints” by Zoomin. For the unknown, Zoomin provides an online platform to order printed photo-books, mugs, calendars etc. The Photo Prints app for now works on the Android & Windows platform on mobile devices. A launch offer entitles a user to order twenty five(25) 4”x6” Matte or Glossy prints or 50% off on 8”x10” prints again in Matte or Glossy finish.
I tested the android platform app over my Motorola Defy smart-phone running Android 4.1.2. The application loads up with a beautiful interface & most of it is self explanatory. If I were to count, exactly, one can simply order the photo prints in 3 simple steps. One selects the photos, mentions the print settings & then places an order for the photo prints. Off-course, you need a Zoomin account to place the order.
The application works smoothly even on my fairly old device & the transitions from screens are smooth. One can order prints in 4×6,5×7,6×8,8×8,8×10,8×12 inch size in Matte, Glossy or Metallic finish. If your photos are not in a specific aspect ratio required for printing, the application even has a easy to use crop tool which one simply drags across the selected photograph. Once you’re satisfied, you can move on to place an order. Payment can be done via Net Banking or even via Cash on Delivery(extra charges). I recommend you use a stable Wi-Fi/3G connection for this application else you might encounter issues in uploading/payment. Also make sure you upload high resolution(less than 6MB in size) photographs if you wish to print in larger sizes. There is also a feature which lets you request an address. It is useful in case you wish to send photos to someone but don’t have their address. Choosing this option, Zoomin would contact the person(on one’s behalf) via email or SMS(provided by you) for the address and then your prints will be on their way once the person provides the address. I haven’t tried this so can’t comment on this.
For now, Photo Prints only supports ordering prints anywhere in India(Flat Rs.49 for shipping an order) & promises a fast delivery time. I received my prints on the third day from placing the order. The prints were wrapped in a wonderful envelope & even included a contact sheet of all the prints I ordered. A small “Thank You” card bundled within the envelope is a nice addition. The overall experience of receiving the prints is really personal. You can literally feel the love. The photo prints were awesome in quality printed on high quality Kodak Archival Paper & came without any creases. The quality was really wonderful, I can assure that.
However, as with all things the app has some shortcomings. In the Photo Prints app, once you select the size/finish of your photo print say 4×6 in Matte then it is applied to all the photos you wish to print. This is really inconvenient unless you need to order all of your photos in a specific size. Also importing options for time-being are limited to just the one’s in your phone(Camera, Whatsapp & Other Folders). Importing from Instagram, Facebook, Flickr would be really welcome as most users have tons of photos uploaded online over these sites. Another issue I encountered was the app refused to show up “My Orders” each time saying “Hey! You’re yet to place an order”. Again, delivering outside India would broaden the market for this unique photo print ordering app. Sure, the application is only going to get better as time goes. For now, if you’re in India and need to order prints, Photo Prints is the definitely the way to go.
