GNOME desktop has been completely revamped in its new avatar, the GNOME 3. All the changes till now have made it more usable than before. I’m quite liking the new desktop but there is one thing that annoys me big time. Where is the shutdown button? I couldn’t find it anywhere. Is there any keyboard shortcut or mouse gesture to shutdown the desktop? I quite literally, shutdown my computer from the virtual consoles by issuing an ‘init 0’ command for some instances till I figured out the shutdown button is indeed present but not visible(as it was in testing releases of GNOME 3).
To shutdown the computer when using GNOME 3, you need to click on your user-name in the far right top corner of your screen. Upon clicking you’ll get the regular drop-down menu, with the last option as ‘Suspend’. Now press the ‘Alt’ key on the keyboard & keep it pressed and voila the ‘Suspend’ option magically turns into ‘Power Off…’. Upon clicking, you’ll get to choose between a system restart & shutdown.
There you have it. I don’t know why the GNOME team decided to make it so mysterious. GNOME has always been a user-friendly desktop environment but such moves may make its users turn to other alternatives. Already some users have expressed their annoyance to the new changes of the GNOME 3.
I am also one of those people who didn’t like GNOME3 🙂

The idea was to make an interface easy to use as well as visually appealing. infact you dont need to touch the mouse to use your pc. press the super button and type something to launch an app. or you can press alt+tab and press tab to switch windows.

I agree. Its geared towards multiple platforms & not just for PC’s. I’m quite enjoying using it but still needs some refinement for sure.

In my opinion this is the best graphic user interface that is available today. I would add a shaded [+Alt] near the word suspend.

Press and Hold Alt and then press on the status applet/indicator, or press and hold alt while status applet/icon is already pressed. Suspend will change to Shutdown.
But I still don’t know how to reboot, the only way for me is to type `reboot` into terminal

You should get the option to restart or shutdown, once you do the alt method. If not, something seems wrong.

Why not simply add Reboot and Shutdown to the existing menu? Is that too much to ask? I turn on my PC about every three days, to do bills, check emails, and apply the 70 or so Linux updates that were issued since the last time I powered up. I then completely shut down. Sometimes, due to the updates, I need to reboot. I don’t know why I should have to return to the login screen to reboot. No one else is logged in (that I’m aware!)

It’s a shame they haven’t taken it further, how about every time you want to open a terminal you have to solve a slide puzzle? Or software block all network adapters on startup untill you can solve a 15 letter anagram?

You should keep the ‘ALT’ key pressed which will then turn the suspend option into ‘power off’.
