In Better Photography October 2013

I renewed my subscription of Better Photography(BP) magazine yesterday & the BP team member instantly handed me the copy of this month. I placed the copy in my bag & went through my day. In evening as I was waiting for my turn at the dentist, I pulled out the magazine & began flipping. To my uttermost surprise, it had a picture from me in the critique section of the magazine.

BP Oct 13

This picture was taken by me in 2009 2011 with my compact camera Canon Powershot SX100 IS. I had mailed it to BP somewhere in 2010 May 2011 & it got published in October 2013. It bought a good long smile across my lips. As they say, “better late than never”. If you’ve bought the magazine this month, do check out page no.102 for my photograph in full glory.

I tend to get most of my photography ideas when I’m sleeping or when I’m least expecting them. At such times, its easy to relax & say to oneself that, “I will implement/work on the idea later”. Stop right there. Get a pen along-with a piece of paper and jot the idea down immediately. Lest it flies out of your head.

Its not paranoia but however strong your recollecting ability be, you’re bound to forget something or at-times not recollect something completely. I make it a point to keep a small spiral pad & a pen in my camera bag & one at my home, so I can quickly jot down the idea as it strikes me. If at times, I’m without pen & a pad, I punch the idea into mobile messages drafts. This way I’m safe from letting off a good photographic opportunity.

This nifty tip was imparted on my ears by the renowned photographer, Shiresh Karrale at a Better Photography workshop. He defined this process as making “Photography Scribbles”. These scribbles have helped me immensely to plan a shoot beforehand. I make it a point to make these scribbles as detailed as possible, with lighting diagrams, tips, problems faced & so on. You should also implement this idea in your photography work-flow & experience how overtime it will help you in making better photographs.

In Better Photography August 2011

Who doesn’t likes surprises? Recently, I was in for a surprise when a Feature Writer from Better Photography magazine messaged me. It was for acquiring permission to publish my one of my photograph in their upcoming issue.

Naturally, who the hell would decline such a lucrative offer considering such a reputed magazine approaches on its own. Its a big honour for me as I never dreamt about such a thing so early in my photography career. The excitement here is much bigger than when a photograph you send for critique or for other purpose gets published. I sent the photograph & here it is published in the Better Photography August 2011 issue.(If you’ve the magazine, checkout page no.53 of BP August 2011 issue)

It feels highly motivated & the self-confidence sky rockets even more considering I’m able to produce great photographs with my limited equipment. Only I know how much efforts were gone into making this particular shot. It feels just awesome considering my photographs have never been published in any photography magazine. It was a good move from the Better Photography team & I hope they continue to showcase good work of other less renowned/small/non-professional photographers. This will not only boost their confidence but also help them gain some exposure. Now my next goal would be to get published again, again & yet again! :)

Lamp Pole : Photo Series

A month ago or so, I went out with my friend to relish a yummy snack of Dabeli. My tastebuds were satisfied & I was waiting for my friend to finish his dabeli. At that time, I happen to look upwards. I saw an electric pole(the one with sodium lamps). Since I was standing exactly besides the pole, the pole seem as if it was reaching into the heavens. It strucked to me that this would be a good photo opportunity. I pulled out my camera & took a shot. Not impressed I started to observe what more I can do to enhance it. Another shot & as they say rest is history. I was hooked to it & decided to do a photo series a la Better Photography style. [Click on photographs to enlarge]
